What to do while you wait
If you have already called us, these few things keep a bad morning from getting worse. None of them involve touching a spring or a cable.
- Stop after the first failed attempt. Pressing the button again is what turns a stuck door into a bent section or a stripped drive gear.
- Say on the phone if a car is shut inside. It changes the order we do things, because the door has to come up by hand before anything else.
- Keep people and pets away from a door that is part open, hanging crooked or sitting on a broken spring.
- Do not pull the emergency release while the door is up. That releases the weight of the door. If you need to practise with the release, do it with the door closed.
- Note what you heard. A single loud bang from the garage almost always means a spring, and telling us that means the right parts are on the van.
Springs, cables and doors off their track are the jobs we ask you to leave alone. They hold the energy that lifts the door, and they are the reason this trade has a safety standard at all. Everything gentler than that is covered in our maintenance guide.
Call now, or can it wait?
Not every fault is an emergency, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a night call-out. Here is roughly how we triage it on the phone.
Worth calling straight away:
- A loud bang and the door will not lift
- The door is crooked, off its track, or a cable is hanging loose
- The door is stuck open and the garage cannot be secured
- The door came down fast or slammed
- A vehicle is trapped inside and you need it
Usually fine until the next working day:
- The door works but is getting noisy
- The remote range has dropped off, or a keypad has stopped responding
- The opener light is out or blinking
- A draught under the door, or perished weatherstripping
- The door is slower than it used to be but still cycles normally
If it falls in the second list, the sensible thing is to book it rather than wait for it to become the first list. A door that is getting noisy is a door telling you something is wearing.
What happens when you call
We diagnose as much as possible on the phone, because the symptom usually narrows it down. You get the price before any work begins, not after. We carry the parts that fail most often, so the majority of repairs are finished in a single visit rather than booked back in once a part arrives.
When the work is done the door is balanced and the safety reversal is tested, every time. If a door is genuinely past economical repair we will say so, and a replacement is measured and quoted separately rather than guessed at on the spot. Our cost guide explains what moves the price on each type of job.
The parts that fail most, and what they sound like
- Springs. Rated in cycles rather than years, so a door used as the main entrance wears its springs out sooner than a door used twice a day. The failure is loud and sudden. See spring repair.
- Cables and drums. Usually show up as a door lifting crooked or one side lagging. See cable repair.
- Rollers and hinges. The most common source of noise, and the cheapest thing on the door to put right. See how the roller and hinge types compare.
- Opener drive gear. Motor runs, door does not move. See opener repair.
- Safety sensors. Door refuses to close, or reverses on its own. See sensor repair.
Whatever it turns out to be, we cover the whole city and the near suburbs. Find your neighbourhood on the service areas page.
Garage door repair FAQs
Do you offer same-day garage door repair in Chicago?
Yes. We provide same-day service across Chicago and nearby suburbs, and we answer 24/7 for emergencies including holidays.
How much does garage door repair cost?
Common repairs start in the ranges on our pricing page — we confirm your exact price over the phone before any work begins.
Do you repair all garage door brands?
Yes — LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Linear, Stanley, Wayne Dalton, Marantec and more.
Are you insured and bonded?
Yes. Every job is performed by insured and bonded technicians for your protection.
What should I do if my door won't open?
Don't force the opener — it can cause more damage. Call (312) 973-1556 and we'll diagnose it, often the same day.
Can I open my garage door if the spring is broken?
Please do not try. The spring carries the weight of the door, so with it broken the door is both extremely heavy and unbalanced, and it can drop. Do not run the opener either, because the motor is not built to lift that weight. Call (312) 973-1556 and leave the door where it is.
Why does my door reverse just before it closes?
That is usually the safety sensors rather than the door. The two photo-eyes near the floor stop the door if anything breaks the beam, and dust, a knock out of alignment or a blocked lens will do the same thing. It can also be a travel limit set wrong. Both are quick to diagnose.
What does a noisy garage door usually mean?
Most noise comes from the rollers, hinges and track rather than the opener. Worn steel rollers, dry hinges or loose hardware all get louder over time, and a grinding sound from the motor while the door stays still often means a stripped drive gear. Noise that arrives suddenly is worth a look.
